To know oneself

To know oneself, is not to be self-centered or having one’s own body as project in life. Socrates was not self-centered, he understood him self as part of reality understood as cosmos. The stoic tradition explore nature and to live a good life is to live according to nature. Today’s culture of optimization of oneself is an attempt to conquer nature. The essence of knowing one self is to know one self as been part of reality and not to master reality.

To care

I was born defenseless, naked, and without the ability to take care of myself. Nevertheless, I am alive. My parents trusted me; they were not critical, not suspicious, or in any way repelled by me. I was a stranger in their lives, yet they chose to take care of me. It’s the same with all new. It is strange in its newness. Yet, there is something familiar, something universal. Something we trust in and feel secure enough to take care of without legitimization or validation.

The essence of envy

Envy is one of the strongest driving forces in man, but also one of the most shameful. The essence of envy is the ability to compare oneself to others. The more we compare ourselves to others, the more unhappy man becomes. That is why we resist intensely when envy is the guest who knocks on the door of our soul. Envy and despair are moods to revolution, and envy turns justice into equality.

The essence of school content

The essence of a content in school is a solidified version of the living earth. If such solidified content is to have the right to live, it must be brought to life in the classroom and the teacher must be able to unfold the essence and the significant of the content that the pupils can learn to care about. This is why pupils should start by digging in the earth and not being presented a content sitting at a desk.

Body essentialism

Essentialism is unfolded through human actions. That is to say, what we do well is done essentially with significance or with meaning. But this meaning is not necessarily thought of as control, benefit or consequence, but can just as easily be about experience, love and care for the world. Human meaningful being in the world is essential rational. It is a bodily rationalism as the opposite of empirism and the understanding of reality as data.
