If a person has a bad behavior, you may understand his action by analyzing what he has done. You may give reasonable understand to how the behavior turned bad but still, you would never do the same. You would be a spectator giving analytical knowledge to the situation. A synthetic understanding would mean that you would be able to do the same as the other person. This is not only a question of analyzing the behavior but bringing aesthetic- and ethical reasoning into the understanding. A synthetic understanding is an physical engagement, a participation into the behavior. Human are not able to have a true synthetic understanding of bad behavior. Human can only have synthetic understanding of behavior we would be able to wholeheartedly imitate and improve. A synthetic understanding gives insight and not only analytical knowledge.

To understand is just a small part of an experience. When we experience a phenomenon we often search for understanding. But a true experience is being with a phenomenon, to participate in the world, and not being a spectator analyzing the world. What it tries to portray is a core we are able to sight, but not see. We are not able to express this truth in words of direct correspondence, so we have to resort to images and fables. The more abstract a insight is, the more metaphorical is our language. No one has used metaphors better than Plato, but neither has anyone else struggled more to free one selves from this use.
